Mozambique has ratified a US$72.7-million financial agreement for the first phase of the construction of a road between Mueda and Negomano, cabinet spokesperson Ana Comoana said on Wednesday.According to local media reports, Comoana – who is also Deputy Culture and Tourism Minister – said the road was key for making viable the Unity Bridge over the Rovuma River that connects Mozambique and Tanzania.
Funding would be provided by the African Development Fund of which $69.7 million is a loan, and the rest is a grant.
The loan agreement with the Fund was signed in February.
The bridge was inaugurated in 2010 by the presidents of the two countries.
The level of traffic over the bridge has remained very low, largely due to the poor condition of the existing Mueda-Negamano road.
