A Mozambican police officer is being detained for shooting and killing an 18-year-old boy while chasing a gang in Moamba district, Maputo province, a source from the corporation told Lusa on Monday (09-20).
The incident took place on September 13, as the agent was “trying to neutralise a group that was threatening people with the use of bladed weapons,” said Carminia Leite, spokesperson for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Maputo province.
According to Leite, the group, of which the victim was allegedly part, fled after noticing the presence of the police, and during the pursuit the agent “involuntarily” shot the young man.
“The Police of the Republic of Mozambique regrets the death and extends the most heartfelt condolences to the family,” said Carminia Leite, adding that the police officer in question was arrested on the day of the incident.
The PRM urged all members of the corporation to “observe care in the handling of firearms” to prevent such situations from happening again.
In June, a 34-year-old man was shot by police officers in a Maputo city neighbourhood after breaking the window of a police car and later died.
The victim’s body was found by the family in the morgue of Maputo Central Hospital after a 10-day search, and just before it was to be removed for collective burial, relatives told Lusa at the time.
