The Mozambican police have dismantled a small clandestine factory producing amphetamines in Katembe, on the southern edge of Maputo, said a source from the security force.
During the operation unveiled on Wednesday, the police detained four people, two Chinese who produced the drugs and two Mozambicans who were helping them.
At the time, they were in charge of two trucks transporting the reagents from the port of Maputo to the residence where the factory operated.
An unspecified quantity of methamphetamine was also seized.
Some tunnels had been dug at the site, presumably to serve as an escape route.
The investigation of the case is in the hands of the country’s criminal investigation service (Sernic) to assess the importance of the factory and its ramifications.
The police also mentioned that a man died a few days ago at the site from poisoning after inhaling gases produced in the makeshift laboratory.
To disguise the smell of the drug production, the owners decided to install an aviary for raising poultry.
The operation followed the dismantling of a small clandestine factory producing ‘mandrax’ last week in the municipality of Matola, also in the outskirts of Maputo.
