Five Mozambican officials have been detained on charges of raping a 21-year-old girl in the southern city of Inhambane, the provincial police spokesman told Lusa Monday.
Juma Dauto said that the detainees were two officers from the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), two from the National Public Safety Service (SENSAP, firefighters) and one from the National Migration Service (SENAMI).
Dauto advanced that some of them raped the victim and others assisted in the preparation and consummation of the act.
“The rape took place last month, but only now did the police learn about it through the media, having sought the victim for statements,” the spokesman said.
The investigation “culminated in the arrest of the suspects”, he added.
The victim was taken by the suspects from a residence where she was attending a party to the home of one of them, where the rape took place.
“The police cannot condone this kind of behaviour, especially when it is committed by law enforcement officers, who should set an example,” concluded Juma Dauto.
