The Attorney General’s Office has ordered the detention of 13 prison staff suspected of falsification in the release on probation of Nini Satar while he was serving a prison sentence for his involvement in the murder of journalist Carlos Cardoso, Lusa reports.
According to a source in the Mozambican Attorney General’s Office, the detainees include Ramos Zamboco, the former director of Maputo Provincial Penitentiary, and José Machado, former director of Maputo City Preventive Penitentiary.
In addition to falsification, the National Penitentiary Service officials are suspected of abuse of office and duties.
Nini Satar refused to return to Mozambique after obtaining judicial authorisation for medical treatment abroad following his release on probation after completing half his 24-year sentence for the murder of Mozambican journalist Carlos Cardoso in 2000.
He was arrested in Thailand in July 2018 under an international warrant.
The Maputo City Judicial Court has charged Nini Satar with six crimes committed in 2016, including kidnapping, attempted kidnapping, use of prohibited weapons, association to commit a crime and aggravated robbery.
The Mozambican authorities suspect Nini Satar of being among those responsible for the wave of kidnappings in Maputo mainly targeting businessmen and their families between 2011 and 2014.
