More than 185,000 young Mozambicans signed up for compulsory military service (SMO), after 30 days of census operation, which ends on Monday, according to data from the Ministry of Defence (MDN).
According to a balance sheet of the MDN, cited on Monday by the daily Notícias, the numbers of the military census achieved this year represent 92.97% of the projected target.
The goal was to cover 200,000 young people born in 2002 and who turn 18 this year and those over that age who did not register in previous years.
The provinces of Maputo, Southern Mozambique, with 22,811 registered, and Zambézia, Central, with 22,052, are the ones that registered the highest number of youths for the SMO.
The province of Cabo Delgado, North of Mozambique, and facing a wave of armed violence since October 2017, registered 12,205 registrations out of a target of 14,952.
The military census does not imply automatic admission to the SMO since only young people with an aptitude for service are recruited after screening.
Besides being mandatory, the military census in Mozambique is justified because young people need to show their registration card for employment purposes.
