Maputo, Feb. 12 (Lusa) – Maputo Criminal Court on Tuesday began the trial of former Mozambican ambassador in the US Amélia Sumbana, charged with embezzling about $500,000 (€440,000) between 2009 and 2015.
The 65-year-old defendant said on Tuesday, in the first session of the trial, that she can prove her innocence with receipts and invoices.
“I never gave an oral order to benefit myself of any amount, because there were documents and monthly accountability to the ministry,” she said.
The public prosecutor’s office said that Sumbana has committed crimes of abuse of office, embezzlement and money laundering.
Among other offences, Sumbana used part of the money to buy and refurbish a property in Maputo, later registered in her husband’s name.
According to the prosecution, Sumbana issued cheques to herself saying that the funds served for works in the official residence and for the service of the diplomatic mission and asked for refunds for unmade air travel.
