Mozambican police have detained a man in possession of 112 kilograms of heroin in Mocuba district, Zambézia province, central Mozambique, the corporation announced yesterday.
Police spokesman in Zambézia, Sidner Lonzo, told the media that the suspect was transporting the drug in the false bottom of the trunk of a light vehicle bound for Malawi.
Lonzo said that the police investigation revealed that the man crossed Mozambique’s borders ten times between January and February, having found entry and exit visas for Malawi, Eswatini and South Africa. in his passport
The product originated in Nampula province, in the north of the country, and the individual’s detention resulted from a tip off, Lonzo added.
Police also found US$5,000 and 14,000 meticais (€193) in cash in the suspect’s possession.
The detained man told the media that he did not know who the heroin belonged to, because he only acted as a “transporter”.
Strong Live reports that the 48-year-old man supposedly holds dual nationality [apparently Eswatini and Mozambique citizenship] and had stopped in Mocuba to refuel . He was supposedly carrying the drugs from somewhere in Nampula province. The drugs could be destined not only to Malawi but also to Eswatini and South Africa, StrongLive adds.
