After the attack on Macomia, reportedly the fifth by a group locals call ‘Al Shabaab’, who have murdered at least 32 civilians in less than two weeks, Interior Minister Jaime Basílio Monteiro travelled to Cabo Delgado province “to do everything necessary to return the security and stability situation of local communities to normal”.
“We are bringing energies and initiatives to improve the deployment of the Defence and Security Forces on the ground and to restore the lives of the people to normality as quickly as possible. We are going to speak with the Security and Defence Forces, we are going to speak with the leaders, we are going to speak with the people, but our presence here is essentially aimed at doing everything in order to normalise the security situation of the community,” Monteiro told Radio Mozambique, speaking yesterday in the Macomia district, where three of the most recent attacks occurred.
In terms of the authorities’ response, the minister said: “Fortunately, it is achieving rapid penetration into vulnerable areas. There is some sense of security, but a significant part of the population has been forced to leave the area, especially those whose houses no longer have a roof. But a certain confidence in the work of the Defence and Security Forces on the ground remains.”
