An Indian man was kidnapped on Sunday in the city of Maputo, who injured the victim’s wife and daughter with the butt of a pistol, police said on Monday in the Mozambican capital.
The man, 68, was intercepted by strangers while in the company of his daughter and wife as he had just got out of his car and was heading home on one of the avenues in Maputo, Leonel Muchina, police spokesman in Maputo told reporters on Monday.
In addition to taking the victim away, the criminals used a weapon, suspected to be a pistol, to beat the wife and daughter, Muchina added.
The man was taken in a vehicle to an unknown location and his wife and daughter were taken to hospital, said the police spokesman.
The victim’s wifie remains hospitalised, while the daughter was discharged on Sunday, Muchina said.
Sunday’s crime comes after several months of calm concerning this type of crime in major Mozambican cities, following a wave of kidnappings targeting businesspeople and their families.
Last year, the Mozambican authorities recorded more than 10 kidnappings.
