The managing director of the IMF, Tao Zhang, on Monday in Maputo called on the new Mozambican government to continue structural reforms and macroeconomic stability, noting that the country has performed well in recent years.
Tao Zhang spoke about the path Mozambique has taken in the economic field, in statements to journalists, at the end of a meeting with the Mozambican minister of economy and finance, Adriano Maleiane – who maintained the position he already held in the previous executive.
“We hope that these reforms and policies will continue in the coming years, particularly in the areas of macroeconomic stability, structural reforms and good governance,” said Tao.
“We are confident that with the new leadership of Filipe Nyusi and his government these policies and reforms will be continued,” said Tao Zhang.
On the other hand, Mozambique is recovering well from the devastating impact of cyclones Idai and Kenneth, which affected the central and northern regions of the country last year.
Tao Zhang stressed that the IMF is committed to supporting Mozambique to achieve good results in the macroeconomic area.
The IMF delegation, led by Tao Zhang, is the first to visit the country after the president, Filipe Nyusi, took office for a second term and after the government was formed.
Ricardo Velloso, IMF mission chief who visited Maputo in November, said at the time that if the government is interested in talks about a possible financial support programme, the IMF is open to that request and to have those talks.
The availability had already been first announced by Abebe Selassie, director of the IMF’s Africa department in a statement to Lusa in Washington on 18 October.
The IMF thus admitted, for the first time since the hidden debt scandal in 2016, that the institution is willing to provide financial assistance to Mozambique again.
