Humanitarian aid organisations provided assistance to 1.1 million people affected by natural disasters last year in Mozambique, according to figures published on Thursday by the World Food Programme (WFP).
The WFP’s annual report on Mozambique showed that US$51.6 million (€43.8 million) were channelled to cover basic food and nutritional needs for victims of natural disasters in 2017.
The report shows that 74,000 children received emergency food aid in schools and this type of help was also provided to 104,000 students.
The WFP noted that, in 2017, school meals reduced the school drop out rate by 6.7%, with the 93% of students returning to school and new admissions increasing by 4.2%.
In total, US$10.1 million (€8.6 million) were spent on school meals.
Humanitarian assistance against natural disasters also included the fight against malnutrition, with a focus on food fortification, including adding vitamins to food. This process cost US$2.7 million (€2.3 million) and benefited 17 million Mozambicans.
