The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says that the Mozambican authorities are gradually regaining the creditor confidence shaken by the discovery of the so-called ‘hidden debts’, but some analysts say the resumption of state budget support by the IMF may still take some time.
Mozambique IMF representative Ari Aisen is quoted by Radio Mozambique as saying on Tuesday 28th that the government’s openness to clarify the hidden debts issue is helping to restore creditor confidence.
“We know that the Mozambican government is in contact with its creditors and international partners, and we hope that these discussions will move forward and have good results for the country soon,” Aisen said.
He also said that the national reconciliation process led by President Filipe Nyusi and the opposition was improving Mozambique’s international image.
Other analysts however say that they acknowledge the government’s efforts to clarify the hidden debts issue, but that they are not enough to warrant the resumption of IMF support to the state budget.
