Mozambique is preparing regulations that will force companies to compensate for damage caused to the environment, Sean Nazarali, director of innovative funding solutions at the Mozambican Foundation for the Conservation of Biodiversity (Biofund), a private fund, told Lusa on Monday.
“If we cut down a tree, we plant a tree,” Nazareli exemplified during a break at a meeting of African environmental funds that brings together representatives from Mozambique, Magascar and Uganda.
The Ministry of Earth, Environment and Rural Development is preparing a law with technical assistance from Biofund and other entities to guarantee that it follows international standards.
The obligation to reestablish certain environmental conditions will be part of a process to obtain an environmental license which is renovated every five years in Mozambique.
The new regulation is expected to come into force by the end of the year.
