A girl from the village of Lindi, in Montepuez district, who was thought to be dead, is said to have “resurrected” this week in Cabo Delgado, Montepuez district administrator Isaura Máquina has told Radio Mozambique.
Eurélia Manuel Benjamim was presumed dead last November, and a burial service was held. She has now resurfaced in the community, and says that, during the period she was missing, she was actually working in a family member’s ‘machamba’ (small-holding).
“They conducted all the funeral ceremonies: the funeral, third day ceremony and visiting the grave – and the grave has not been breached. Last week, rumours began to circulate that the girl was walking around some machambas. And on the 29th of this month, the girl was recovered in one of these machambas, and returned to her family. The girl says she was in her uncle’s machamba, tending his cucumbers, the whole time,” Maquina said.
Other reports, such as the one in the audio below, insist that the girl first resurfaced, naked and half-starved, in Sapala, Namuno district.
Family members who went to fetch the girl were scared when they saw her and started crying. She told them that, to take her home, they must cover her and transport her by motorbike, not by bicycle, or her uncle would see her and stop her leaving.
She also asked to be “treated” by the ‘Che’ before entering her home village.
