The Mozambican defence and security forces have arrested four confessed terrorists in Balama district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, reports Wednesday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Carta de Mocambique”.
The four were detained in a house belonging to a local primary school teacher, known locally as Abdala. The authorities acted against the four as the result of a tipoff.
“Carta de Moçambique” says its investigations show that Abdala moved funds belonging to the terrorists in local banks. His younger brother had worked as a trader in Palma and Mocimboa da Praia districts, but then joined the terrorists and took part in some of their raids.
While his brother was waging war, Abdala was depositing money in various bank accounts, and buying products for the guests who would stay at his house.
According to a source in the Mozambican forces, military equipment was found in Abdala’s house. Some of those detained said they had been renting rooms in the house.
The house is in the Balama neighbourhood of Marimba, which is where nine alleged terrorists were detained in late 2021. Among them was a man named Sualey who was accused of recruiting members to the jihadist group in Balama.
Meanwhile the Cabo Delgado Provincial Executive Council has announced that a large number of state employees, displaced from their homes by terrorist attacks, have now returned to the district of Macomia, and life has returned to normal in Macomia town.
The provincial authorities also announced that the buildings of the Macomia District Planning and Infrastructures Service have been fully rehabilitated, as well as the local aerodrome, the maternity ward, much of a primary school in Xinavane neighbourhood, and the civil registry office.
Macomia farmers have ploughed 11,620 hectares of land, and 16 schools in the district have been reopened. But displaced people have not yet returned to the Macomia administrative posts of Chai and Mucojo.
