Mozambicans should regard the defence of the country against criminals as a struggle against diseases that are trying to undermine a healthy body, declared President Filipe Nyusi on Friday.
He was speaking in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, in the northern city of Nampula at the close of an officers’ training course in the Samora Machel Military Academy.
At the ceremony, Nyusi stressed that the defence of the country and its sovereignty is the task of each and every Mozambican.
“The defence of our beloved motherland against any type of threat should be seen by all Mozambicans as a primary condition for guaranteeing peace and development”, he said, comparing this defence to the defence of the human body against disease.
“If we weaken our body, then the pirate diseases penetrate, whether you are a cadet, a peasant, a worker, a journalist, a teacher, a nurse – we all have to contribute so that the protein prevails”, said Nyusi.
The “pirate diseases” he was thinking of, he explained, “are these criminals who intimidate and kill our people”. There should be no room for them “in our body, which is Mozambique”.
The term he used (“malfeitores” in Portuguese) is the word habitually used by the government to describe the terrorist groups, apparently inspired by Islamic fundamentalism, which have been waging a low level insurgency in the northern province of Cabo Delgado since October 2017.
Nyusi called on the graduates from the course “to be pro-active and innovative in your mission in a permanent and cautious manner”.
He wanted them “to research the modus operandi of those who are attacking our sovereignty and territorial integrity, with the intention of retarding our development”.
Nyusi said that training the permanent staff of the armed forces is a necessary investment to increase the capacity of the Mozambican army. It was also key to update the defence forces “to adjust them to the new paradigms of how defence and security operates in an environment of peace, harmony and national reconciliation”, while they were also endowed with the instruments “to face the new threats to our development”.
