Mozambique has reached for the first time the milestone of 10,000 tonnes of castor sugar exported to European markets, to countries such as Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, according to a report in Tuesday’s issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”.
The Minister of Agriculture, Celso Correia, said the volume of exports results from the setting up, in November 2018, of a refinery at the Xinavane sugar mill in Maputo province with an installed capacity of 900,000 tonnes.
Over the last two years, Correia stressed, Mozambique has stopped importing refined sugar at a time when encouraging signs of economic recovery are evident.
The executive director of Mozambique’s Association of Sugar Producers (APAMO), Joao Jeque, said however that the total sugar production projection for the ongoing year, estimated at 306,000 tonnes, in the plants of Marromeu and Mafambisse in Sofala province and Xinavane and Maragra in Maputo may be undermined by adverse factors such as poor productivity of the soils and climate change.
The four plants affiliated to APAMO have a theoretical annual production capacity estimated at 530,000 tonnes. The vast majority of this sugar production is unrefined.
Sugar producers describe 2018 as one of their best years, where production levels reached 348,000 tonnes.

I guess that Xinavane refinery capacity is 90.000 tonnes per year
