Renamo leader and candidate Ossufo Momade has sent a message of condolence to the ruling Frelimo party on the death of ten people at Mozambique Liberation Front rally in Nampula city.
“Those men and women [who died] are first and foremost human beings, among the best citizens in the country, given their activity and interest in the country’s affairs,” the message from the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) leader reads.
The incident is a serious blow to Mozambican families and society, and resulted in irreparable losses, the letter said.
The deaths occurred on Wednesday when a crowd who had been at a meeting of Frelimo Liberation Front candidate Filipe Nyusi rushed to the only open exit at the 25 de Junho Stadium in the city of Nampula in northern Mozambique.
Following the incident, the Mozambican Interior Ministry suspended the provincial police commander in Nampula, Joaquim Sive, and announced the launching of a public inquiry.
“The police will do their utmost to clarify the case and take steps to mitigate the suffering of bereaved families as well as those who have suffered injuries,” Director of Inspection at PRM General Command in Nampula Moisés Augusto said.
