The following are preliminary and unofficial results from STAE and from our correspondents based on local parallel counts and local STAE reports. Renamo has won six municipalities and seems likely to win several more, but local officials are not releasing data in some of those cities.
Angoche in coastal Nampula province remains very close, with Renamo and Frelimo each having 46%, with 71% counted. Renamo has claimed victory. But in Ilha de Moçambique, Renamo’s victory seems secure – It has 50% compared to 37% for Frelimo and 10% for MDM, with 48% counted.
Renamo victory in Quelimane seems secure. With 50% counted, Renamo and mayor Manuel de Araujo have 56% compared to 40% for Frelimo and 4% for MDM. Renamo also won Alto Molocue, with 92% counted, Renamo has 51%, Frelimo 44% and MDM 5%.
Frelimo has won Milange, with all polling stations counted, with 57%, to 40% for Renamo. Frelimo has won Maganja da Costa with 53%, to 42% for Renamo and 6% for MDM.
An unofficial parallel count in Mocuba, with 96% of polling stations, gives a close Frelimo victory, with Frelimo 50% and Renamo 46%.
In Tete, in Moatize, Renamo won with 51%, Frelimo 46% and MDM 5%.
In Cabo Degado, Frelimo won Montepuez with 52% and Renamo 44%, while Renamo won Chiure with 58% and 38% for Frelimo.
In Niassa Frelimo is winning Lichinga with 57% to 40% for Renamo with 64% counted..
In Sofala, in Nhamatanda, on a 67% turnout, Frelimo won with 55%, with Renamo 40% and MDM 5%.
In Gorongosa, Frelimo won with 72% to 21% for Renamo and 7% for MDM, on a 65% turnout.
In Marromeu Frelimo is reported to have won with 47%, Renamo 44%, and MDM 9%.But there are serious problems with this count, and result sheets were not posted at many polling stations, making a parallel count very difficult. And it will be contested.
High turnouts.
In Quelimane some polls remained opened until 19.00 because turnout was so high. In Beira two-thirds of registered voters went to the polls. In Manica, turnout was over 60% in all municipalities. In some parts of Nampula, however turnout fell to 40%.
Comment: In many places this election has had a much higher turnout than previous municipal elections, and Renamo’s showing is higher in many places than in the past, leading to close races. Renamo is gaining more than 40% in a significant number of municipalities, and seriously challenging Frelimo in Matola. MDM has done badly even in its key cities. It was not able to keep control of Gurué or Quelimane, and in its home city of Beira Daviz Simango will remain mayor, but MDM is not gaining half the vote. Joseph Hanlon
