José Manteigas, Renamo’s representative in Inhambane province and national spokesman to the party, was arrested by the Rapid Intervention Force in the early evening of Tuesday, while following the counting of votes at Madauca Primary School, in Massinga.
Speaking at the Massinga District [Police] Command with DW correspondent Luciano da Conceição, Manteigas said it all started in the morning when the district election commission [CDE] tried to withdraw his credential and he refused. Early in the evening, the MP was surprised by the security forces, who say they are awaiting for thelegalisation of the arrest by the District Attorney’s Office.
José Manteigas classifies his detention as a way to intimidate the opposition while carrying out a democratic and pluralistic act.
