A team of mostly young Mozambican doctors has successfully removed a giant four-year-old tumour from the her neck of 34-year-old patient Cristina Arnaldo.
The director of the Provincial Hospital of Tete, Lídia Cunha, said that the doctors carried out studies to avoid any type of complication before the surgery.
”The patient is five months pregnant with twins. Over time, the tumour grew and compromised the upper airways, making swallowing difficult, in addition to the weight it represented,” she explained.
Maxillofacial surgeon Gerónimo Brilão, who was part of the team, said the surgery took 10 hours and that there were no complications.
“The team was multisectoral, with contributions from a Cuban doctor, maxillofacial surgeon Osdany Cancio, anaesthetists, nurses and other auxiliaries,” Brilão said.
He added that this was the first surgical intervention of its kind in the Provincial Hospital of Tete, and that a sample of the extracted tumour had been sent to Beira Central Hospital for analysis.
“We suspect synovial sarcoma, or papillary carcinoma of the metastatic thyroid, but the final diagnosis will depend on the results of tests at the Beira Central Hospital laboratory,” he concluded.
