Manuel Gonçalves, Mozambique’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, this Tuesday begins a three-day visit to Russia to “strengthen cooperation in the political-diplomatic, business-economic and social fields”, the government has announced.
The visit comes a month after Mozambique received a Ukrainian delegation on a tour of Africa in search of support against the Russian invasion and the war that is devastating the country.
Mozambique was among the countries which abstained on three United Nations General Assembly resolutions broadly condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Mozambique has a special role, as it assumes the rotating non-permanent member seat on the UN Security Council on January 1st.

The Mozambican deputy minister will also hold meetings with representatives of the Russian business sector and the Mozambican student community in Saint Petersburg.
Manuel Gonçalves is accompanied in his visit to the Russian Federation by members of staff from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, of Mineral Resources and Energy, of Industry and Commerce, of Education and Human Development, Ministry of Health, Ministry of the Interior and State Secretariats for Technical-Vocational Education and for Sports.
