Mozambique’s health minister said on Wednesday that Covid-19 had affected the HIV/AIDS programme in the country due to the reduction and diversion of resources to cope with the pandemic.
“The normal programmes for other diseases had to be reduced in terms of performance, because of a lack of resources and because of the fact that Covid-19 has imposed lockdowns in many countries,” said Armindo Tiago, quoted by daily newspaper Notícias.
According to the minister, Covid-19 forced the reallocation of resources from the programme to fight HIV/AIDS and other diseases, which culminated in a reduction of the gains obtained in its combat.
The isolation imposed by Covid-19, Armindo Tiago said, also affected the “export of medicines and hospital consumables,” which led the entity to extend the period of prescribing antibiotics.
“One of the measures adopted was the introduction of long-term packs. In this context, we dispensed medicines for longer periods so that patients would not travel frequently to health units and would comply with the social distancing,” stressed Armindo Tiago.
The latest Survey on Immunisation, Malaria and HIV/AIDS Indicators in Mozambique (Imasida), conducted in 2015, showed that the country was one of the five countries with a high rate of infection by the pandemic worldwide, with 13.2%tof young people and adults aged 15-49 infected.
