Mozambique | Covid-19: Two deaths, 65 new cases and 276 recoveries reported on Thursday - AIM report
The Mozambican health authorities on Tuesday reported a further 48 new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease – three times the number of cases that were reported on Monday.
According to a Tuesday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 1,251,954 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 1,806 of them in the previous 24 hours.
1,758 of these tests yielded negative results. The 48 positive cases bring the total number of people identified with the coronavirus in Mozambique to 224,767. Of Tuesday’s new cases, 24 were women and 24 were men.
The provinces with the largest number of cases were Gaza (17 – 35.4 per cent) and Maputo city (12 – 25 per cent). There were also seven cases from Zambezia, five from Niassa, three from Cabo Delgado, three from Maputo province, and one from Tete. No positive cases were reported from the other four provinces.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be infected with the virus) remained virtually unchanged – 2.63 per cent on Monday and 2.66 per cent on Tuesday.
Over the same 24 hour period, two new Covid-19 cases were admitted to hospital, both in Maputo. No patients were discharged, and no deaths from Covid-19 were reported. Thus the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique remains 2,189.
The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 wards rose from 15 on Monday to 17 on Tuesday, four of whom were receiving supplementary oxygen. Ten of these patients (58.8 per cent) were in Maputo. There were two patients each in Nampula, Manica and Gaza, and one in Zambezia. No Covid-19 patients were hospitalised in any of the other six provinces.
The Ministry also reported that a further 125 people were declared fully recovered from Covid-19 (58 in Cabo Delgado, 34 in Maputo city, 22 in Tete and 11 in Zambezia). This brings the total number of recoveries to 218,558, which is 97.2 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with the disease in Mozambique.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 fell from 4,093 on Monday to 4,016 on Tuesday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 3,324 (82.8 per cent of the total); Cabo Delgado, 165; Maputo province, 145; Niassa, 145; Tete, 64; Manica, 60; Gaza, 39; Nampula, 36; Zambezia, 26; Sofala, nine; and Inhambane, three.
The Ministry release also reported that, over the previous 24 hours, a further 43,435 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. The number fully vaccinated against the disease has now reached 10,539,799, which is 68.1 per cent of all citizens aged 18 years and above.
