Mozambique’s government on Tuesday said that it had contacted the Ethiopian authorities after 64 Ethiopian citizens were found dead in a container in central Mozambique, along with 14 survivors.
The government learned of the death of 64 citizens found in a container, plus 14 victims still alive said Filimão Suazi, Mozambique’s cabinet spokesman, at the end of an ordinary meeting in Maputo.
The Mozambican state contacted the Ethiopian embassy to deal with the legal procedures related to the occurrence.
The victims were inside a container of goods loaded onto a truck from Malawi and intercepted at a weight checkpoint in Mussacama, Moatize district, police sources reported to Lusa.
Officials forced the container open after survivors started banging from inside the container and shouting.
“Colleagues realised there was something strange at 1 a.m. when talking to the drivers,” said Amélia Direito, spokesperson for the Tete provincial migration services.
The driver and the truck’s assistant, who received 35,000 meticais (€487) for the transport of immigrants, were arrested by the police, who continue the searches by the middleman who facilitated the illegal entry of immigrants.
The Zobuè border between Mozambique and Malawi, in Moatize district, has been a privileged corridor for illegal immigrants trying to reach South Africa, crossing part of Mozambique, in search of a better life.
