The Mozambican authorities have prepared treatment and isolation centres in all provinces of the country, following records of the first cases of the new coronavirus in African countries.
“Isolation and treatment centres have been identified in all provinces,” reads the Mozambican government’s action plan against Covid-19, consulted on Tuesday by Lusa.
Despite noting that there are no confirmed cases in Mozambique and neighbouring countries (in southern Africa), the country’s authorities are taking several measures to prevent the outbreak.
“In a situation of absence of cases as it happens in Mozambique, the main objective of active surveillance at the main points of entry is to prevent the introduction of the virus into the country,” states the document, which among other measures proposes stepping up checks at points of entry (land borders, ports and airports) – a measure that is already underway.
The document stresses that many places in Mozambique could constitute vulnerable entry points for travellers infected by Covid-19.
“For this reason, points of entry are an essential element in prevention,” it says.
The government’s action plan against Covid-19 is budgeted at around 2 million meticais (€27,000).
The Covid-19 outbreak, which can cause respiratory infections such as pneumonia, has caused more than 3,100 deaths and infected more than 90,300 people in some 70 countries and territories, including four in Portugal as of Tuesday.
In Africa, according to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control on Tuesday morning, a total of nine infections have been recorded: in Algeria (3), Nigeria (1), Egypt (2), Morocco (1), Senegal (1) and Tunisia (1).
Of patients infected around the world, about 48,000 have recovered, according to health authorities in several countries.
In addition to 2,943 deaths in China, where the outbreak was detected in December, there is a record of deaths in Iran, Italy, South Korea, Japan, France, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, Thailand, the US, San Marino and the Philippines.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the Covid-19 outbreak to be a very high risk international public health emergency.
