The Christian Council of Mozambique (CCM) has expressed concern about the armed attacks carried out by unidentified groups in northern Cabo Delgado province since October 2017.
“We as religious persons are very concerned, so we call on the Assembly of the Republic to work together to find a solution that can bring us effective peace,” CCM President Felicidade Chirinda said, quoted in a statement from parliament.
In the belief that dialogue is the best way to solve Mozambique’s problems, the CCM met Assembly of the Republic speaker Verónica Macamo in Maputo.
“We believe that there is a need to stop these small outbreaks of evil, because they could spread throughout the country in the future, as seen in other conflicts the country has endured,” the Reverend Dinis Matsolo is quoted as saying.
For her part, Verónica Macamo said that it was in Parliament’s interest to see Mozambicans enjoying peace, quiet, well-being and harmony, all conditions for the country to continue fighting poverty.
“With peace and well-being it is possible to overcome the poverty which plagues Mozambicans, and the People’s House [Assembly] will do everything to put Mozambicans as far as possible from this evil,” she said in the statement.
The Cabo Delgado region in the north of the country has been the site of attacks by armed groups since October 2017, after years of latent conflict between Muslims of different origins, the violence being born in radicalized mosques.
At least 300 people have died, according to official and unofficial figures, and 60,000 residents have been affected, many forced to travel elsewhere for safety, according to the United Nations.
Since August 10 people have been killed and several injured on roads and in villages in Manica and Sofala, victims of what are suspected of being dissident guerrillas of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) launching attacks targeting goods and passenger transport.
