The Mozambican Football Federation (FMF) announced today the renewal of its contract with national coach Chiquinho Conde, valid until January 31, 2026, with an eye on qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
An FMF press releases details that Chiquinho Conde’s mission is to qualify the Mozambican national team for the 2025 CAN and the 2026 World Cup
“These objectives reflect our nation’s aspirations to reach the highest levels of international football,” reads the FMF statement, which adds that the organisation has “complete confidence” in Mr Francisco Junior [Chiquinho Conde’s full name is Francisco Queriol Conde Júnior).
Chiquinho Conde played football at a number of Portuguese clubs, including Belenenses, Sporting de Braga, Vitória de Setúbal and Sporting.
The extension of Chiquinho Conde’s contract follows some tension between himself and the federation, after FMF president Feizal Sidat accused the coach of being “ungrateful”.
Feizal Sidat said at the time that Chiquinho Conde disrespected him in the presence of the national team players by demanding that he keep quiet in the changing room after the game in which Mozambique secured access to the final phase of the African Nations Championship (CAN).
In the last seven years, Mozambique has sacked three national coaches, two of them Portuguese, following poor results.
Since October 2021, with the arrival of Chiquinho Conde, the performance of the “Mambas” national football team has improved, last year succeeding in making it to the final phase of CAN, 13 years after their last presence there in 2010.
CAN 2025 will take place from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026, in Morocco, while the 2026 World Cup will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico, from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
