Watch: Frelimo rejects accusations of reactivating "death squads" - Mozambique
We were deeply concerned to hear of the death of Anastácio Matável, who was shot in Gaza on 7 October. This was a shocking act of violence, and we offer our condolences to his family and loved ones.
Civil society, election observers and journalists have a key role to play in free and fair elections, and it is vital that they are able to carry out their duties freely and without fear of violence or intimidation.
We welcome that the Mozambican authorities have taken early action and started an investigation into this incident. We now call on them to ensure that this crime is investigated in full and those responsible swiftly brought to justice.
