The Ministry of Industry and Commerce has banned the importation of non-fortified wheat flour, corn, cooking oil, salt and sugar, the inspector general of the INAE revealed yesterday during the institution’s bi-weekly briefing.
The ministry has also prohibited the import of packaging for these products that does not have the fortification seal, but will allow merchants to sell product they currently have in stock.
“What is in the national market chain will continue to be sold until such stock is exhausted. The industries have already received the premix and are fortifying the products, but they have packaging that does not present the symbol of fortification. INAE and its partners are surveying all the industries in order to verify the quantities of the existing products, so that the fortification logo can be acquired,” the inspector general explained.
