A boat carrying about a dozen foreign citizens has been seized on the beach in Pemba Bay, near the capital of Cabo Delgado, during a Defence and Security Forces operation.
The facts of the matter were confirmed by the Mozambique Police (PRM) provincial command, although Augusto Guta, PRM spokesman in Cabo Delgado, said police would only be able to comment further on the case after the Criminal Investigation Services had finished their investigation.
The wooden boat, about 20 metres in length, was in flames when Defence and Security Forces seized it, rescuing and detaining the foreign citizens, thought to be Asian, who were on board.
The origin, destination and legality of the vessel and passengers are still officially unknown, but the security situation in Cabo Delgado has fuelled speculation that the boat is connected with the armed group which has been waging a campaign of terror against civilians and military personnel in the north of Cabo Delgado province for about two years now.
