Mozambique: Mauritius group ETG appeals to president over 'pigeon pea saga'
SABC / A quick resolution has to be reached at the Africa Sugar Conference to make sure that sugar production continues to blossom amongst the SADC region.
The sixth annual Africa Sugar Conference underway in Maputo, Mozambique, is seeking to find alternative global markets to export their sugar product from next year.
This as the contract to export sugar with European countries comes to and end next year.
Countries like South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland produce more than 100 000 tonnes of sugar annually, with South Africa leading with 92 000 tonnes.
It is a production which is more than the required sugar for domestic markets.
Now, a quick resolution has to be reached to make sure that sugar production continues to blossom amongst the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
Meanwhile, this year’s sugar production is expected to drop to below 70 000 thousand tonnes due to the severe drought that has recently hit the Southern African countries.
