The Secretary General of the Association of Veterans of the National Liberation Struggle (ACLLN), Fernando Faustino, denounced the alleged Western interference in internal affairs in Mozambique, which seeks to remove the Frelimo party from governing the country at all costs, Notícias reports.
To this end, he said, they “use and abuse” Renamo to obstruct the Mozambican government, encouraging this party to remain armed to frighten the people into voting for them in the next electoral process.
Fernando Faustino denounced such attitudes, advising the Western chancelleries to follow the Vienna Convention, which regulates international relations.
On the same occasion, Faustino criticised Renamo for allegedly being misled by behaviours that “attack the national sovereignty and the dignity of the Mozambican people.”
Faustino cited, as an example, the recent interview the UK High Commissioner Joanna Kuensberg gave to the weekly mewspaper Savana in its June 29th edition, which insinuated that the demilitarisation of Renamo should not be a condition for concluding the debate of municipal legislation, now suspended at the Assembly of the Republic.
The Secretary-General of ACLLN said that the European Union representative, Sven Kuhn Von Burgdsdorff, behaved along the same line of thought, by openly supporting all organisations, individuals and groups opposed to Frelimo, adds Notícias.
“I believe this is not the function of diplomats. If they do not know their role, they should learn now, that one of their duties is to stimulate peacekeeping, international security and the development of friendly relations between nations, regardless of the diversity of their constitutional and social systems, ” he said.
He lamented on the fact that Renamo, a party made up of Mozambicans, allows themselves be carried away by what Faustino considers to be misconceptions that do not contribute to the well-being and development of the country. He said that Renamo must respect the will of the people as expressed in the poll processes which occur cyclically every five years for presidential, legislative, provincial and municipal assemblies.
He clarified that in order for elections to take place in a climate of peace and harmony, Renamo must accept demilitarisation and the consequent insertion of its residual [armed] men normal society.
According to the secretary general of the ACLLN, in case it continues armed, the Renamo party will never attain power, even though it counts on the support of these chancelleries who are openly hostile to Frelimo.
