The Mozambican health authorities on Tuesday reported a further 40 cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease, and 45 recoveries.
According to a Tuesday press release from the Ministry of Health, 28 of the new cases were men and 12 were women. 33 were Mozambican citizens and seven were foreigners (in line with standard practice, their nationalities were not disclosed). Their ages varies from nine to 61.
The positive cases were scattered across the country – 14 in Gaza, five in Zambezia, five in Sofala, four in Cabo Delgado, three in Inhambane, three in Niassa, and two each in Nampula, Maputo city and Maputo province. The only provinces that reported no cases on Tuesday were Tete and Manica.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1,360,988 people have been tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 629 of them in the previous 24 hours. 589 of these tests yielded negative results, and the 40 who tested positive raised the total number of positive cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 229,117.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) fell from 10.54 per cent on Monday to 6.36 per cent on Tuesday.
Two Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital on Tuesday, both in Niassa, and one new case was admitted, also in Niassa.
The number of patients receiving medical care in the Covid-19 wards fell from seven on Monday to six on Tuesday – four of these patients were in Niassa, with one each in Cabo Delgado and Inhambane. None of these patients were in intensive care.
No further deaths were reported on Tuesday, and so the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique remained 2,215.
Of the 45 recoveries reported, 40 were in Maputo city and five in Niassa. The total number of recoveries rose to 226,483, which is 98.85 per cent of all cases of Covid-19 ever diagnosed in Mozambique.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 fell from 420 on Monday to 415 on Tuesday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Gaza, 98; Sofala, 77; Zambezia, 62; Nampula, 61; Inhambane, 38; Cabo Delgado, 37; Maputo city, 17; Tete, 13; Niassa, seven; Manica, three; and Maputo province, two.
The Ministry release also reported that, over the previous 24 hours, a further 1,735 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. The number of people fully vaccinated against the disease now stands at 14,593,298. This is 96 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
