Matola Municipality will in the next few days place an additional 20 garbage containers in order to address deficient waste management, mainly in the Machava and Infulene administrative posts.
According to Florência Muianga, Councillor for Health, Environment, Parks and Gardens in Matola, the 20 containers are already being transported from the factory and will soon be distributed to the neighbourhoods.
“The criterion for allocating containers by neighbourhoods will depend on the {garbage] collection capacity, which in turn involves the availability of trucks, for transportation,” Muianga explained.
She added that neighbourhoods with the highest demand would have priority in the allocation of containers and waste collection, in order to avoid garbage piling up.
“The biggest challenge is to eliminate the [illegal] dumping sites. We have managed to remove some, such as in the Khongolote and T3 neighbourhoods and close to the Santos market,” she said.
The clearing of garbage near the Maeva factory was currently underway, she added.
“We have partially eliminated the sources of garbage in the neighbourhoods. Unfortunately, some resident persist in dumping waste in inappropriate places, so putting an end to fly-tipping, illegal dumping sites, is a challenge,” Muianga concluded.
