Groups of Mozambican students have been selected for an international project to design and produce low-cost ventilators.
Twenty-five groups of students from Mozambique and Ghana competed in the initiative, with one of the Mozambican teams winning third place. They now join together in the fight against the new coronavirus.
The first and second places were taken by students from Ghana, while other Mozambican teams took fourth and fifth places. All will now share their ideas in this unique project.
The ventilator to be produced cannot cost more than US$500 dollars, though most ventilators currently cost between US$11,000 and US$40,000.
The company that will produce the ventilators is based in neighbouring South Africa.
The judging of projects submitted by students in the ‘Field Ready’ training programme was undertaken by juries from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa and competing countries, Mozambique and Ghana.
The initiative comes as the Mozambican government announces the purchase of 300 ventilators for an amount of more than US$3.3 million US dollars, an average per-unit price of US$11,000.
