Two-time rope jumping champion the “Moz Tigers” climbed the podium last Saturday and bowed for the gold medals in the modality’s premiere in the Arnold Classic Africa championships.
The Mozambican team out-skipped eight senior South African teams and showed why they have been world champion for two consecutive years with a display of agility and beauty that charmed the audience and elicited applause from the event’s patron, Arnold Schwarzenegger, himself.
The athletes, all newcomers to the competition, won two gold medals in the speed and creativity categories, the national coach saying the choice of beginners was due to the need to ensure that all team members have experience of major competitions.
The Arnold Classic international competition debuted in the United States in 1989 with an international series of multi-sport festivals. This is the first time the competition has been held in Africa.
Back in Maputo, the two-time of rope jumping champions continued to knock on doors to raise funds and fund their trip to the World Championships in the US in July. Even with the trip in doubt, the athletes have already started preparing in the hope of being able to defend their newly won title.
