Mozambican police announced on Friday the arrest of three suspects in the case of the murder of four members of the same family, including three children, in Chimoio, Manica province.
“Individuals who may have been the perpetrators of the crime were detained, and investigations will show their degree of guilt,” police spokesman Mário Arnaça told the press.
The victims are a 32-year-old woman and her three children, between 5 and 16 years old, who were found dead and already in an advanced state of decomposition in Chimoio’s Nhamaonha neighbourhood on Thursday.
“First signs indicate that the victims were strangled,” the spokesman added.
Authorities suspect the family was killed for “passionate reasons”. A man reportedly seen leaving the residence on Tuesday is among those detained.
According to the head of the Nhamaonha neighbourhood, Luís Pedro, the bodies of the victims were only discovered after the suspect sent a message to a family member informing him that he had killed the woman because she had rejected him.
João Ferreira, president of Chimoio Municipal Council, visited the victims’ residence to provide support on Friday, saying that the municipality would support the family regarding funeral expenses.
“It is a horrible thing, and we will do everything we can to support the family,” Ferreira told reporters.
