Notícias / Verónica Macamo addressing parliament on Thursday
The Assembly of the Republic (Mozambican parliament) is to create a commission of inquiry to establish the facts about the undisclosed debts incurred by the Mozambican government between 2013 and 2014.
The announcement was made yesterday, Thursday 9 June, by Parliamentary Speaker Verónica Macamo in the closing speech of the extraordinary session convened to discuss the issue. Macano said the commission would come into being “as soon as the legal conditions are met”.
In the debate that ended yesterday, Minister of Economy and Finance Adriano Maleiane confirmed that the state debt now totals US$11.6 billion, while Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario said that the government would only service debt that had been incurred for purposes in the public interest.
In interventions during the special session, which began on Wednesday, the majority Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo) bench, the main opposition party Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) and the third largest party, the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) all supported the establishment of a commission of inquiry.
When news of the existence of the undisclosed debts surfaced in April, Frelimo voted against an opposition proposal for the formation of a commission of inquiry, arguing that parliament could not act on information from abroad.
