Mozambique: LAM sells 12,000 tickets to Lisbon
Voa / In Inhambane, the cruise will anchor in the clear waters of Pomene beach.
After a three-month advertising campaign on South African radio and in newspapers, more than 3,300 South African tourists are now cruising the Indian Ocean to Mozambique on the MSC Sinfonia.
Mozambique’s consular missions in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria last week saw visa applications by tourists travelling on the dual nationality cruise, as South African citizens are exempt from visas for Mozambique when on a 30-day sightseeing visit.
A source at the tour company said stop-overs include the Ilha dos Portuguses, Ilha de Moçambique and Inhambane, one of Mozambique’s main tourist destinations. In Inhambane, the cruise will anchor in Pomene Beach, which has been preparing frantically to welcome the tourists.
Many leisure facilities in Pomene were destroyed by cyclone Dineo in the first half of this year, leaving hundreds of people unemployed, and this is the first large cruise to visit Inhambane since then.
Last May, the Inhambane government held an investors’ conference to mobilise investments in various economic sectors, especially tourism.
