The Mozambican justice system filed 1,255 lawsuits for crimes against the environment between 2016 and 2018, Constitutional and Religious Affairs Minister Joaquim Veríssimo is quoted by Notícias as saying today.
The cases are related to poaching, illegal logging, mineral resources and trafficking of flora and fauna products.
Veríssimo pointed out that environmental crimes cause “incalculable damage” and merit relentless combat.
“Judicial and prosecutorial magistrates must be trained to provide effective response to poaching and illegal trafficking in flora and fauna,” he said.
The specialisation of magistrates in environmental crimes was necessary in an effective fight against such crimes, he added.
