Mozambique: Intense heat kills crops in Matola, Maputo province

Montepuez district of Cabo Delgado Province has started producing oil from cotton seed.
Plexus, a company that grows cotton and operates a ginning plant in that region, produces 16,500 liters of oil per day.
The factory intends to employ more than 100 workers, all of them nationals, to operate in three shifts that will each produce 5,500 liters, amounting to 16,500 liters per day.”
In addition to oil, which will be sold to existing refineries in the country for domestic use, the factory will produce bagasse for animal feed for local and foreign markets.
Cabo Delgado Province produces an average 30,000 tonnes of cotton per year in the districts of Namuno, Balama, Montepuez, Ancuabe and Chiure which, due to the lack of a textile industry, is exported to foreign markets.
According to the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Food Security (DPASA), the installation of the cotton seed oil plant is part of some initiatives of the cotton subsector to to increase the crop’s value.
Other initiatives include the installation of a manual weaving pilot center by the National Cotton Institute.
