Montepuez Ruby Mining, Lda (MRM), in partnership with the Institute of Vocational Training and Labour Studies, Alberto Cassimo (IFPELAC), has commenced the Vocational Training Centre (VTC) programme of Namanhumbir.
The VTC is aimed at creating employment opportunities for local residents, especially for the young adults, in order to equip them with qualifications that will enable them to acquire sustainable jobs, and this in turn will help in the contribution and building of the regional and national economy, thus alleviating and nurturing successful and self-reliant communities. MRM spokesman Hemant Azad said: “This training will ensure individual benefits for each trainee, the district of Montepuez and the country as a whole.”
The VTC is part of the MRM Resettlement Program, that will cost US$1.2 million, providing short-term professional training courses in the areas of Masonry, Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical Installation, Business Administration, Agriculture, Painting, Arts, Welding and Heavy Machinery Operations. The courses will run for three to four months in each period, with a total of a hundred trainee candidates a period, resulting in 300 applicants being trained annually.
Valentim Mendes, coordinator of the VTC, said, “In this first period of the programme, we have a total of 100 students, 50 Bricklayers, 25 Plumbers and 25 Carpenters. 64 of the trainees come from the village of Nthoro, 17 from the village of Mpene, 11 from Namanhumbir and 8 from Nanhupo A and B. ”
The VTC will provide training to locals in order to enable them to be a part of the locally hired workforce involved in building the resettlement village of MRM and to equip those community members with skills they can use to look for other employment opportunities in the region.
The vocational training activities will be temporarily accommodated in the village of Nthoro and then transferred to the new VTC complex in Namanhumbir, which will officially be opened in October 2018.
