Metrobus integrated transport system trains were unable to run in Maputo and Matola on Monday (20/2) because of heavy rains which have caused landslides into the railway line.
The interruption, which also affected Mozambique Ports and Railways (CFM) trains on the Infulene-Maputo section, affected the journeys of nearly 15,000 passengers to Maputo Central Station.
To minimise the impact, Metrobus immediately activated contingency plans and transported passengers in part of its fleet of 100 buses.
Buses were due to start picking up passengers at 4.30 a.m. from Massaca and running from Namaacha (quarry) to Boane; at 5:30 pm Km16, Matola-Rio, João Mateus, Ceres N4, Malhampsene, to Beluluane/Mozal; and at 4:30 p.m. from Kobe, Socimol, Km15 and Malhampsene to Machava.
In Maputo, buses to Alto-Maé, Bairro Central, Museu, Sommershield and Costa del Sol are available at the CFM Central Station. Metrobus has been operating the Boane-Beluluane-Machava-Central Station route since February 19.
In order to contribute to urban mobility and reduce demand for other transport services, Metrobus is running two early passenger trains from the Matola-Gare, Machava-Sede and Boane stations to Maputo Central Station.
