The city of Matola, in the province of Maputo, is to get a passenger train station within the framework of the new public transport system, the promoting company announced yesterday.
“Matola’s private passenger train station will be one of the largest to be built in the Metrobus integrated transportation system,” the concessionaire said in a statement.
The new station will have a capacity for 1,500 people and parking for 400 vehicles, as well as an auto-repair shop and commercial establishments.
Metrobus is a private initiative, with buses and trains linking the main urban centres of Maputo province as a way to cope with the transport crisis in the province.
Until the station is built, passengers will disembark at a temporary station in the Matola Cargo Terminal.
Yesterday, an experimental trip between Maputo and Matola was attended by representatives of the two municipalities.
Amade Camal, president of Sir Motors, the company responsible for the initiative, has said that all conditions are in place for the start of the first phase of the project, which will cover 25 rail and road stops.
Metrobus tickets will cost of 2,500 meticais (EUR 34.00) per month, with shorter trips costing 1,250 meticais (EUR 17.00).
The idea, according to Camal, is that middle-class users will leave their cars at home, allowing better circulation for public transport.
The transport crisis has even resulted in open vehicles being used to transport people instead of freight, a means of transport popularly known as “My Love”, because passengers are obliged to embrace each other in order not to fall off.
