An unarmed youth whose identity A Verdade was unable to ascertain died in Nampula on Thursday night (September 28), allegedly shot dead by a Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) agent who has since been arrested by the police.
The shooting took place around 7:00 p.m. in the Aeroporto neighbourhood, where the youth was picking green mangoes near the UIR barracks.
In addition to the gunshot wound, the body of the deceased showed bruises suggesting he had been subjected to ill-treatment.
The young man’s body was only found after hours of searching, covered with grass on uninhabited terrain, suggesting an attempt by the perpetrator to hide the body.
The UIR agent currently detained in connection with the crime claims the dead youth refused to obey his orders.
Zacarias Nacute, spokesman for the PRM Provincial Command in Nampula, said a preliminary investigation had concluded that there was an excess of zeal on the part of the UIR agent and that he should consequently be held criminally accountable.
Nacute said that, at the time of the events, the deceased was in the company of friends, who fled when the first shots were fired, before the victim was killed.
