Mozambique: LAM missed H1 target, new chairman says

Maputo City Zoo is to concentrate on the maintenance of infrastructure in the hope of restoring the attraction’s image, Notícias reports.
Improvements include the renewal of cages and other measures which will, according to director Daúde Carimo, make the site a reference point in zoology and botany.
“Right now our biggest challenge is to ensure the maintenance of the zoo, and we will be rehabilitating buildings depending on the funds donated by our sponsors,” he said.
Last year the wall bordering the Inhagoia neighbourhood was restored, preventing the theft of animals that was contributing to tourist spot’s decline. Other projects include the development of shops and leisure infrastructure, backed by the zoo’s individual and corporate donors.
Currently the zoo has 20 species of animals, including mammals, reptiles and birds, well below the facility’s capacity.
“We have no new animals, and although those we have now are breeding, the animal population we have is only that of three years ago,” explained Carimo.
Faced with the challenges of the future, Maputo Zoo is considering transforming the gardens into a theme park with the country’s predominant species of fauna on display.
“The theme park idea implies specializing in a particular type of animal. For example, Mozambique has a great wealth of bird life, and we would like to explore this aspect,” Carimo said.
