A citizen presumed to be at least 30 years old was shot dead on Thursday night (28 February) in Matola’s Matlemele neighbourhood, for reasons so far unknown.
Witnesses cited by A Verdade said that the murderers told the victim to run away, but gunned him down before he could do so. By the time they arrived at the scene of the crime, the perpetrators had already fled.
The identity of the victim is unknown. The body was found on a section of the Maputo Ring Road, which for most of its length has no public lighting.
Local witnesses also reported that the perpetrators, whose number is uncertain, were travelling in three cars whose registration plates and makes were not clear either.
Witnesses say that, before the shots, there was discussion among the group, while the condemned man remained inside the car. What was being said was not known, but the killers suddenly got the young man out of the car and took his life.
This is not the first incident of its kind in the area, where the lack of public lighting facilitates crime, as it does also along the Ring Road.
According to police spokesman Fernando Manhiça, the deceased had no documentation on him, but was not a resident of the area where the crime took place.
Police think this may be a settling of accounts and not a robbery, since neither the car nor the victim’s mobile phone were taken.
