Macau’s health bureau issued a high alert related to dengue fever on Wednesday, following heavy rainfall and several reported cases in areas bordering the special administrative region of China.
“Macau is experiencing a high-risk season and the probability of local cases arising has not been excluded,” the statement said.
Residents are reminded to take preventative measures, namely eliminating stagnant water near their workplaces and homes.
“The mosquitos Aedes Albopictus that can transmit dengue fever are common in Macau and they prefer small pools of stagnant water,” the statement added.
Macau’s health authorities have carried out 5,170 inspections of sources of potential dengue proliferation.
In 2017, 16 cases of dengue fever were recorded in Macau.
